The Boiler Upgrade Scheme in plain English, what changed in 2026, and what you don't need to pay for
The grant, in plain English
- Boiler Upgrade Scheme: the government grant for replacing a fossil fuel heating system with a heat pump. Run by Ofgem, paid to the installer, taken off your bill.
- £7,500: the standard amount for an air source heat pump in a gas heated home in England.
- £9,000: the current amount for homes heated by oil, LPG or electric storage heaters. A temporary uplift.
- MCS certified installer: the grant is only available through installers certified under the Microgeneration Certification Scheme. We are.
- Heat loss calculation: a room by room calculation of how much heat the house needs. Required for the grant, done at the survey.
- EPC: the Energy Performance Certificate. You need one, but since 2026 it no longer has to show no outstanding insulation recommendations.
- Upfront discount: the grant is shown on the quote and invoice. You pay the net figure. The installer claims the grant after commissioning.
- Fossil fuel boiler removed: the grant requires the old gas, oil or LPG system to come out. You can't keep it as a backup.
- Zero VAT: separate from the grant, heat pump installations are zero rated for VAT.
Who qualifies, and what's involved
- Homeowners in England: you own and live in the property, or it's a rental you own. Most homes in the West Midlands qualify.
- Replacing a fossil fuel or electric system: gas, oil, LPG or electric heating going out, a heat pump going in. A house that's never had heating doesn't qualify.
- An EPC: valid within the last ten years. If you don't have one, we can arrange it.
- Before the work starts: the application goes in before installation and you confirm it by email. Work started before the application is not funded.
- Commissioning and certificate: the system is commissioned and the MCS certificate issued. That's what releases the grant to the installer.
- Timing: from survey to installation is usually two to four weeks, most of which is the application and the parts.
Honest advice: what's overkill
- Paying someone to “manage” the grant: the application is the installer's job and part of the price. A fee to process it is a fee for nothing.
- Rushing because “the grant is ending”: the scheme runs to 2028 as things stand. Take the survey, take the quote, take your time. The £9,000 uplift for oil and LPG is the only part with a shorter window.
- Insulating the whole house first just for the grant: since 2026 the grant doesn't require it. Insulation is still worth doing for running costs, but it's your choice, not a condition.
- A heat pump because the grant makes it cheap: £2,500 after grant is a good price for a heating system, but only if the house suits one. If it doesn't, we'll tell you and a new boiler is the better spend.
- Worth paying for: nothing extra. The grant, the application, the heat loss calculation and the MCS certificate are all in the quote.
