The parts that make your hot water, why it stops, and what you don't need to pay for
How your boiler makes hot water, in plain English
- Combi boiler: heats water the moment you open a tap. No tank, no cylinder. Most Walsall homes have one.
- System or regular boiler: heats a tank of water in a cylinder, usually in the airing cupboard, so it's ready when you need it.
- Diverter valve: on a combi, the motorised valve that switches the boiler from heating to hot water when a tap opens.
- Plate heat exchanger: on a combi, a stack of thin metal plates where the boiler's hot water warms the tap water. Limescale blocks it.
- Flow sensor: tells the boiler a tap has opened. If it fails, the boiler doesn't know you want hot water.
- Cylinder thermostat: on a system boiler, tells the boiler when the stored water needs heating.
- Motorised valve: on a system boiler, sends the boiler's heat to the cylinder or the radiators.
- Immersion heater: an electric element in the cylinder. A backup if the boiler side fails.
- Pressure gauge: low pressure stops the whole boiler, hot water included.
What usually goes wrong, and what fixing it involves
- No hot water but the heating works, combi: the diverter valve is stuck on heating. Replacing it is about an hour with a part from the van.
- Hot water lukewarm or goes hot and cold, combi: the plate heat exchanger is scaled up, or the flow rate is low. Descaling or replacing the plate is a one visit job.
- No hot water and no heating: the boiler itself has stopped. Check the pressure first. Then it's usually a fan, ignition or sensor fault, or a frozen condensate pipe in winter.
- No hot water, system boiler: the cylinder thermostat, the motorised valve or the pump. All quick diagnoses and usually same day repairs. The immersion heater can give you hot water in the meantime.
- Hot water fine, but takes ages to arrive: not a fault. It's the length of pipe between the boiler and the tap. A recirculation pump fixes it if it really bothers you.
Honest advice: what’s overkill
- A new boiler because the hot water's gone: the diverter valve and plate heat exchanger are the two most common hot water faults and both are parts, not boilers. Repair unless the boiler is old and this is one of several faults.
- A whole new cylinder for a failed thermostat: cylinder thermostats and immersion heaters are cheap parts. The cylinder itself rarely fails unless it's leaking.
- A water softener sold on the back of one scaled plate: Walsall water is moderately hard. A scale reducer on the boiler inlet does the job for a fraction of the price.
- Worth paying for: on a combi, a scale reducer fitted on the cold feed. It protects the plate heat exchanger, which is the part that fails most.
When to call
Check whether the heating still works and what the pressure gauge says. If the heating works and the hot water doesn't, it's a valve or plate job, message us. If neither works and the pressure is fine, it's a boiler fault, message us. If you have a cylinder, switch on the immersion heater so you have hot water while you wait. Contact me now
