Emergency Gas Engineer in Walsall: What Counts and What's Involved

What's a real emergency, what can wait until morning, and what to do before we arrive

The parts that fail in an emergency, in plain English

  • Gas supply and meter: the emergency control valve is the lever on the pipe by the meter. Turning it a quarter turn shuts off all gas to the house.
  • Gas pipework: runs from the meter to the boiler, cooker and fire. A leak here is a National Gas Emergency job first, then ours.
  • Boiler: a boiler that stops in winter is the most common heating emergency. Usually a fault we can fix the same day.
  • Flue: takes the exhaust outside. A blocked or disconnected flue is dangerous and a genuine emergency.
  • Carbon monoxide alarm: if it sounds, get out and ring 0800 111 999. Don't wait for us.
  • Condensate pipe: freezes in cold snaps and stops the boiler. Looks like an emergency, is a ten minute fix.
  • Pressure relief valve: dumps water outside if the pressure gets too high. Water dripping from the outside pipe is a fault, not a flood.
  • Stop tap: for water, not gas. Under the kitchen sink usually. Shut it if a pipe bursts.

What counts as an emergency, and what it involves

  • Smell of gas: not us first. Open windows, don't touch switches, turn the gas off at the meter, ring the National Gas Emergency line on 0800 111 999. They make it safe; we then find and fix the fault.
  • No heating or hot water in winter, elderly or young children in the house: a genuine same day job. Usually a boiler fault fixed on the first visit.
  • Boiler leaking water: switch the boiler off at the fused spur, put a bowl under it, message us. Usually a seal, a valve or the pressure relief valve.
  • Carbon monoxide alarm sounding: leave the house, ring 0800 111 999. We come afterwards to find the cause, usually a flue or a combustion fault.
  • No heating, hot water fine, house otherwise warm: this can wait until morning, and we'll be honest and tell you so rather than charge an evening call out.

Honest advice: what’s overkill

  • An evening call out for a frozen condensate pipe: if the boiler stopped on a freezing night and shows a condensate or ignition fault, pour warm water over the plastic pipe outside and reset the boiler. It works more often than not. Call us if it doesn't.
  • A new boiler at 9pm: nobody should be sold a boiler in an emergency. We make safe, get you warm if we can, and quote a replacement in daylight if it's needed.
  • "Emergency" prices: our prices don't go up because it's urgent. The call out fee is the same and the repair is a fixed price.
  • Worth paying for: a carbon monoxide alarm in every room with a gas appliance. Under £20 each and the one thing on this page that saves lives.
