The parts of a radiator, why they go cold, and what you don't need to pay for
The parts of a radiator, in plain English
- Panel: the radiator body. Single, double or with fins between. More surface, more heat.
- TRV: the thermostatic valve with the numbers. It closes the radiator when the room reaches the set temperature.
- Lockshield valve: the plain valve on the other end, under a cap. It's set once to balance how much water each radiator gets.
- Bleed valve: the small square screw at the top. Letting air out through it is bleeding.
- Flow and return pipes: hot water in one side, cooler water out the other, back to the boiler.
- Pump: in the boiler or on the pipework, pushes the water round. A weak pump means the far radiators never get hot.
- Sludge: rusty water that settles at the bottom of radiators and stops them heating there.
- Magnetic filter: fitted on the return pipe near the boiler, it catches the sludge before it does damage.
- Balancing: adjusting the lockshields so every radiator heats at the same rate, not just the ones nearest the boiler.
What usually goes wrong, and what fixing it involves
- Cold at the top, warm at the bottom: air. Bleed it. If it keeps needing bleeding, air is getting into the system somewhere, which we can find.
- Warm at the top, cold at the bottom: sludge. One radiator can be taken off and flushed in an hour. Several means the system needs a powerflush.
- One radiator cold, the rest fine: the TRV pin is stuck down. Often freed in a minute. If not, a new TRV head or valve is a quick job.
- Radiators upstairs hot, downstairs cold, or the other way round: balancing, or a valve on the pipework. A balance is a short visit.
- Leaking from the valve or the bottom corner: a valve can be replaced on the spot. A radiator leaking from the body is corroded through and needs replacing like for like.
Honest advice: what’s overkill
- Replacing a radiator that just needs flushing: a radiator that's cold at the bottom is full of sludge, not broken. Flush it first. Replace only if it's leaking or badly corroded.
- A powerflush every couple of years: once, properly, with a magnetic filter fitted afterwards, and you shouldn't need another for many years.
- Oversized radiators "to be safe": a radiator sized for the room heats it efficiently. One twice the size just costs more and cycles the boiler on and off.
- Worth paying for: a magnetic filter if you don't have one, and a proper balance after any new radiator. Both are cheap and both are skipped constantly.
When to call
Bleed the cold ones at the top and check the TRVs aren't on 0. If a radiator is cold at the bottom, leaking, or the far ones never get hot however long the heating runs, message us with a photo. Contact me now
