What the Customer Needed

A homeowner here in Walsall got in touch with me recently. They wanted more control over their heating. Their old thermostat was a basic dial on the wall. It had no way to adjust the temperature remotely and no way to set different schedules for different days. They were heating an empty house more often than they realised, and their energy bills were showing it.

They had heard about smart thermostats and wanted to know if one would make a real difference. I said yes, and I explained exactly why.

What a Smart Thermostat Does

A smart thermostat connects to your home Wi-Fi. Once it is set up, you can control your heating from your phone, wherever you are. You can turn the heating on before you get home from work. You can turn it off if your plans change and you are going to be out longer than expected. You can set it to run on a schedule that actually matches how you live.

A standard thermostat cannot do any of that. It just sits on the wall and does what you last told it to do, whether that still makes sense or not.

Fitting the Hive Smart Thermostat

I fitted a Hive smart thermostat at the property. Hive is one of the most reliable systems on the market and it works well with most gas boilers. As I am Gas Safe registered, I am qualified to work safely on any part of the job that involves the boiler or its controls.

The installation itself was clean and straightforward to complete. I removed the old thermostat, fitted the new Hive receiver near the boiler, and installed the Hive thermostat on the wall. I then connected everything up and made sure it was communicating properly before I left.

I also walked the customer through how to use the Hive app on their phone. It takes about ten minutes to get comfortable with it. After that it becomes second nature.

The Result for the Customer

The homeowner now has full control of their heating from their phone. They are not heating the house when nobody is in it. They have set up a schedule that fits their working week and their weekends separately. They have already noticed a difference in how they are using their heating day to day.
