What the Customer Needed

A customer in West Bromwich got in touch because they wanted their old gas fire replaced. The existing fire had come to the end of its life and they wanted something that looked the part as well as working properly. They had chosen a decorative fuel effect gas fire. That is a gas fire designed to look like real burning fuel, logs or coals, without the mess or maintenance that comes with an open solid fuel fire. It sits in the fireplace and gives you that warm, traditional look while running on gas.

Removing the Old Fire and Testing the Chimney

Before anything new goes in, the old fire has to come out safely. I removed the existing fire and made sure everything was left clean and ready for the next stage. With any gas fire fitted into a chimney, the chimney itself has to be checked before the new appliance is connected. This is not a step you can skip. The chimney needs to draw properly so that combustion gases, the waste gases produced when the fire burns, can escape safely out of the property. I carried out a smoke test and a draw test on the chimney to confirm it was clear and performing as it should. Only once I was satisfied with those results did I move on to fitting the new fire.

Fitting the New Gas Fire

With the chimney confirmed as safe, I fitted the decorative fuel effect gas fire in place. All connections were made to the gas supply and the fire was tested thoroughly before I signed the job off. Every piece of gas work I carry out is done as a Gas Safe registered engineer. Gas Safe registration is the legal requirement for anyone working on gas appliances in the UK. It means the work has been carried out to the correct safety standards. You should always ask any engineer working on your gas appliances to show you their Gas Safe ID card before they start.

How the Job Turned Out

The customer in West Bromwich now has a decorative gas fire that looks great in the room and is working safely. The old fire is gone, the chimney has been tested and confirmed clear, and the new fire is connected and commissioned correctly.
